Over the past few years, with the explosion in the use of mobiles to surf the net, it has become clear that designing websites specifically for best display on mobiles and other hand held devices is now an imperative.
Websites are primarily designed to display on desktop computers and laptops. On a mobile device, the website will be displayed compressed both horizontally and vertically to fit the much smaller viewport of the device, and the text will be illegible. The user therefore has to zoom the page, and the expanded page will become wider than the viewport of the device, so the user has to continually scroll right and left to read the page. This makes the experience of viewing the page irksome and inconvenient and may drive visitors away from the website.
Apart from convenience for visitors mobile usability of websites has now become all the more important for search engine ranking. Since April 2015 Google has been using a measure of how mobile friendly a website is in its ranking of websites on Google searches on mobiles. In fact Google actually mark websites with a 'mobile-friendly' label in their search lists on mobiles.
What is responsive design?
Modern websites are designed with technology that enables the website to be displayed with a layout and style that fits the device it is being viewed on. The website styling detects the size of the viewport of the device and the layout and appearance of the website is modified accordingly.
With the large array of devices in the market with different viewports, and landscape and portrait views for each, designing a mobile friendly website is hard work. For some very big websites a separate website is designed for mobiles and hand-held devices. However, for the most the website is designed primarily for desktops and styles are modified to suit mobiles.
We provide responsive design with all our website design packages, included in the price.
